Assorted Article Scans E-mail
Written by Hillary Meister
beatnik-tiny.jpgI've written about a lot of things outside of entertainment and music. Short of typing everything back in I've just put up scans of the original articles. Peruse them at will if you want. These are all rather large scans and come from all sorts of different places. Some of the stories are music related, others deal with the entertainment industry.

Strokes of Genius - 'Inspired by Reading' program inspires young painters.
Printed originally in the Atlanta Jewish Times, 2005.

Songs in the Key of Judaism - Three Musicians with Atlanta Ties Release Jewish-Tinged CDs
Printed originally in the Atlanta Jewish Times, 2005.
Part 1
Part 2

South By Southwest Scene
- Athens Scene Diversity Instead of Division
Originally printed in the Austin Chronicle in preparation for the SXSW Music Conference sometime mid-'90s.

Various Artists - The Soft-Spoken Beatnik Cousin of the Flagpole Christmas Album
Preview of the spoken word recording done through Flagpole magazine sometime in the mid-'90s written for Huh magazine, an off-shoot of Raygun magazine. I had the most fun writing this one!

Simon Bonney
- Preview of a show at The Point in Atlanta, GA, sometime in the mid-'90s. Written for Huh magazine.

buckley-tiny.jpgJeff Buckley - Interview for Ink 19, an alternative paper out of Florida. This was published in December of 1994. A few years later, Buckley drowned in the Mississippi while recording in Memphis, TN. Sadly missed. He's one of my all-time favorite artists. This interview took place backstage at The Point in Atlanta, GA prior to the show. There's a photo of him with his guitarist sitting backstage in my photo gallery .

Lights, Camera, Action in Seminole County - I covered the film industry in Seminole County, which is part of Central Florida (Orlando, et al) for a trade publication called Success in Seminole. I got to watch filming of a movie called "Varley's Game," which I don't think ever saw the big screen. (It's now called "The Eliminator" and you can purchase your very own copy below...)

Buy "The Eliminator"

Gallimaufray - Clever title, eh? We were always trying to outdo ourselves with titling things at Flagpole. I don't know why, but it was fun! Gallimaufry means "a hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley; or a ragout or hash." This was a way for us at Flagpole to piece a bunch of little things together that were happening in the town. I wrote this thing every week... until I could find an intern to do it... and then the name changed.

Jack Weisenfeld Volunteers for Israel - I did a number of pieces for various Jewish newspapers and magazines in the mid-'90s. It was fun and I miss doing it. It was one way I felt comfortable exploring my own Jewish roots and culture.

Record Reviews - a whole bunch of them. Just to show you I can review records - I just don't like to. But if it means free shwag... free CDs, sure, why not! These were for Florida's Ink 19 music newspaper.

More Reviews - These were for Flagpole's review section we called Ear Wax Facts.

Four Influential Executives - I had no leadership on creating this article so I had to find 4 influential executives on my own. But what criteria does one use in finding such people? This was only for executives in the Southeast for the magazine Southeastern Association Executive magazine. I chose people based around businesses that I thought were sustainable and conscientious. I think these four were a very good choice...

Sanford's City Staff Snaps to Attention - a story about Sanford, Florida's new mayor.

Will You Be My MP3 - a tech story for Smug magazine up in New York City.

Follow the Underground Cable... - a story about Heathrow Cable company in Longwood, FL.

tork-tiny.jpgStranger Things Have Happened to Peter Tork - interview with Peter Tork, formerly of The Monkees, now touring with his own band and kicking out the blues. I saw him recently at a small club in Marietta, GA. I must say, he's quite talented with his own stuff and well worth the listen.
